Afraid of the Dark

A Shadow & Parts Workshop, Part 1

Saturday, October 31, 2026  |  11 am to 4:30 pm  |  The Ohm Zome  |  $200

Every October we put on masks and walk around pretending to be witches, demons, and the dead. We think we invented this for the candy. We didn't. More than two thousand years ago, on Samhain, people disguised themselves as the very things they feared, hoping to pass among them unnoticed. The original Halloween costume was a survival strategy: become the thing that frightens you so it can't find you.

We've been doing it ever since. Not one night a year. Every day, with our own darkness.

The work

Carl Jung called it the shadow: everything in us that didn't fit the person we needed to be. The anger you weren't allowed to have. The grief nobody had room for. The wildness, the hunger, sometimes even the brilliance, because we exile our gold as reliably as our garbage. The shadow isn't what's wrong with you. It's what's missing from you.

And it lives in the body. A feeling that once cost you connection gets tagged as a threat, and when it rises, the jaw tightens, the breath goes shallow, or everything goes foggy. This is why you can't think your way into your shadow. After thirty years of working with bodies, I can tell you the shadow has an address, and it's not in your head.

On the one day of the year the whole culture wears its shadow on the outside, we'll go toward the dark together, at the pace your nervous system can actually digest.

What to expect

Five and a half hours of teaching, dyad and group work, reflection, and psychodrama. You'll learn what the shadow is and how it forms, how to recognize it when it shows up as judgment and projection, and how to meet the parts of yourself that were sent underground with curiosity instead of a verdict. You'll leave with practices you can keep using long after the day is over.

How the day unfolds

11:00 — Landing in the body

We open the circle with breath, grounding, and a slow arrival into the body that's carrying you. Introductions, and then the lay of the land: what the shadow is, how parts form, and how to spot yours when it walks in wearing a disguise.

12:15 — The body as a map

In pairs, we pick up art supplies and get our hands moving. You'll create an image of your own body and mark where the shadows live, the places that tighten, go quiet, or hold what was never allowed to speak. We give this the time it deserves. Expect it to be fun. Expect it to be more revealing than you planned.

1:45 — Lunch

Thirty minutes to eat, wander, and let it all settle.

2:15 — Bringing it to the circle

We gather as a group to share what surfaced in the dyads. No fixing, no verdicts. Just witnessing what the body drew before the mind could edit it.

3:00 — A flashlight and a little gentleness

Now the tools. You'll learn somatic ways to work with the shadow when it rises: how to stay with the sensation, soften the grip, and meet an exiled part without sending it back underground. These are the practices you'll take home.

3:40 — The masquerade

Time to put on the costumes you brought. Through playful psychodrama, we give the hidden parts a body, a voice, and the stage they've been waiting for. On Samhain, we don't hide from what frightens us. We dress up as it and let it dance.

4:15 — Closing the circle

We come back together to honour everything that showed up, name what we're taking with us, and close the day with gratitude for the dark and what it keeps.

Who this is for

Anyone ready to get acquainted with what they've pushed down. No experience with shadow work or parts work is needed. Come as you are, and bring a journal, your lunch, and a costume that lets something hidden come out to play.
