Detoxification: Supporting What Your Body Already Knows How to Do
The word detox has been so overused that I want to begin by telling you what I do not mean. I do not mean punishing cleanses, extreme restriction, or the idea that your body is dirty and needs to be purged. Your body is already detoxifying, right now, in this moment, with an elegance no product can match. The real question is whether it has what it needs to do that work well, because in the modern world, many bodies do not.
Your built-in detoxification systems
Detoxification is not an event. It is a continuous physiological process carried out by a network of organs. The liver is the centre of it, transforming fat-soluble compounds into water-soluble ones through two coordinated phases of enzymatic work, so they can be escorted out through bile, stool, and urine. The kidneys filter your entire blood volume many times a day. The lymphatic system, which has no pump of its own and depends on your movement and breath, carries cellular waste toward elimination. Your skin releases compounds through sweat. Your lungs release them with every exhale. Even your brain has a dedicated cleaning system, the glymphatic system, which flushes metabolic waste primarily during deep sleep, one of many reasons sleep is not optional for health.
Why this matters more now
These systems evolved in a very different world. Today the average person encounters thousands of synthetic chemicals: pesticide residues, plastics and their additives, heavy metals, flame retardants, and compounds in personal care products, many of which had no equivalent a century ago. Research from biomonitoring programs consistently finds dozens to hundreds of these compounds in human blood, urine, and even cord blood. This does not mean panic is warranted. It means the body's detoxification workload has increased dramatically while, for many people, the raw materials and conditions that detoxification requires have decreased. The liver's pathways run on nutrients: B vitamins, amino acids from adequate protein, sulphur compounds from foods like broccoli, garlic, and onions, and glutathione, the body's master antioxidant. A depleted, stressed, sleep-deprived body cannot keep up with a modern toxic load.
The piece almost everyone misses: your nervous system
Here is where my somatic training and my functional medicine training meet. Detoxification is housekeeping, and the body only does deep housekeeping when it feels safe. In survival physiology, resources go to vigilance and defence. Digestion slows, which slows bile flow and elimination. Sleep fragments, which impairs glymphatic cleansing. Breath becomes shallow, which reduces both lymphatic movement and exhalation of volatile compounds. You can eat all the broccoli in the world, but a body locked in chronic stress cannot fully use it. Supporting detoxification means supporting the state in which detoxification happens.
How I support your body's detoxification
In my practice, this work is gentle, personalized, and grounded in physiology. Through Functional Medicine coaching, we assess your toxic load and exposures, reduce what comes in, and supply what your pathways need: targeted nutrition, adequate protein, hydration, minerals, and support for liver, bowel, and kidney function, always in the right order, because mobilizing compounds without open elimination routes makes people feel worse. Through hands-on work, including manual Lymphatic Drainage and Visceral Manipulation, I support the mechanical side of the process, the flow and drainage that chairs and stress and shallow breathing suppress. And through somatic work, we restore the settled physiology in which repair and elimination actually occur.
This is detoxification as I understand it: not a war on your body, but a partnership with it. Slow, intelligent, and deeply respectful of what your body has been managing on your behalf all along.
